How did I become the Top Cake Bitch?

From a very young age, I had an itch to be in the kitchen. I credit this to helping my dad with the mass amounts of ziti required to feed our extended family through the holiday season, my grandmotherโ€™s love of sweets and watching the food network with my mom. When I was 8, two different family members gifted me easy bake ovens for Christmas. My mom told me I should just use the real oven and was always very gracious about my offerings, no matter how rubbery, burnt, salty, etc.

In high school, my dad and I would go to the farmers market together and he gave me the opportunity to experiment with all different kinds of ingredients. I would try out new recipes and my friends would come over to eat the pot pie or doughnuts or whatever nonsense Iโ€™d made that day. I never felt discouraged from sending the kitchen into absolute chaos on a daily basis or choosing to bake the thing I saw on pinterest in the middle of the night, and I am so very grateful for that.

I had a few kitchen jobs here and there. I was an assistant to a dietician selling weekly meal prep from her home kitchen, baked at a cupcake chain for two very short weeks and ended up employed in several ice cream stores through my teens.
After a few months at my first proper job while living on my own, a front of house position, I had brought in enough of my baking to convince my managers and the owners to let me put a dessert special on the menu. The friendships and connections I made at this job are some of my most cherished and I wouldnโ€™t be where I am without them.

I owe my abilities largely to the support of my friends and patience of my parents, I appreciate you all so much more than I can express.

Thanks so much for reading :)

Hi friends

Welcome to Top Cake Bitch

Iโ€™m Mary and I hold the honorable title of the Top Cake Bitch. For full clarity, I gave myself this title, however it has not been contested at this point so TCB I shall be. I am the owner and operator of Top Cake Bitch, a cottage bakery in Atlanta. I specialize in custom cakes but Iโ€™m always looking for an excuse to practice pastry and bread baking :)

How it startedโ€ฆ

My first few years of living on my own, I would bake for friends and coworkers randomly and for free. Someone Iโ€™ve worked with for 4 months graduates next week? Iโ€™d ask what flavors they liked and bring in whatever Iโ€™d created. My offerings were quite a mixed bag in terms of skill and quality at that time, I never charged money and always took a slice for myself.

In 2020, I started an instagram to share photos of my baking and have little story sales when I made too much of something. That page has grown and morphed and basically taken over my life (in the best way possible). Now, I get to do pop ups and collaborations and bake cakes for big important milestones like weddings and baby showers. I owe THIS to all of the lovely people Iโ€™ve met the past 4 years and the support of my friends and family. All I want to do is feed people, really, and thanks to all of you I get to do that in my own way.
